In short order, we had determined that the source of their problem was that there were a number of large images that were embedded into their home and per-category pages. In addition, many more images were being loaded optimistically when a page was rendered, but these images were unnecessary on the initial page load. This optimistic loading problem was caused by a quick-order plugin that had been installed.
To solve this, we modified the plugin code to defer the download of the unnecessary images until the images were actually displayed. This solution decreased the loading time of their site by approximately 90%, providing their users with a significantly improved user experience.
